School committee votes to phase out sixth-grade middle-school lottery

The Revere School Committee voted Feb. 10 to begin a phased elimination of the middle-school lottery, removing the lottery for sixth grade while retaining seventh- and eighth-grade placements during the phase-out.
Miss Montroso, who moved the measure, said the committee made the decision after more than a year of community engagement and deliberation. "We've spent over a year talking about the lottery and I think as a committee we've been very thoughtful," she said, noting the motion was intended to balance community, financial and educational considerations.
Committee members discussed three neighborhood-model options to replace the lottery. Miss Montroso and some members said option three appeared most balanced for distributing students with Individualized Education Programs and multilingual learners; Mr. Kingston said longer-term enrollment modeling suggested option one could perform better in a K–8 view. District staff agreed to present additional, longer-term data before a final choice is made in March.
The committee adopted the elimination motion by roll-call vote. Members emphasized the decision will be phased and that the committee will review neighborhood-model data and implementation implications before finalizing assignments.
