Chief Woody presented an intergovernmental agreement for a School Resource Officer (SRO) to serve Belvidere High and Middle Schools. The proposed three‑year agreement would have the school district pay 70% of an average officer’s compensation, and the SRO would work August through May on a 42‑hour week aligned with the school calendar; June and July assignments return the officer to patrol shifts.
Chief Woody described the responsibilities as crime‑in‑progress response, community policing, building rapport with students and acting as a liaison between schools and the police department. The agreement allows the district to schedule the SRO for extracurricular events at the district’s cost for overtime, and either party may cancel with 60 days’ written notice.
A motion to authorize the intergovernmental agreement was moved by Alderman Peterson and seconded by Alderman Stevens; the motion passed by voice vote. Chief Woody told council that the SRO arrangement saves patrol resources and helps maintain school safety through on‑site coverage and relationship building.
Next steps: Staff will execute the agreement with District 100 and finalize scheduling details ahead of the school year.
