Commissioner says mayor blocked council's request for public planning discussion on Altonheim site

"I was told, 'No, the mayor has to want to have that meeting and he doesn't want to,'" Commissioner Maxim said, describing repeated efforts to arrange a conversation among council members about Altonheim, the community center and the reservoir.
Maxim said she is not opposed to using part of Altonheim as a reservoir site but that the council needs a coordinated plan before land is repurposed, sold or put under an RFP process. She described repeated private requests, limited response and frustration that a public conversation has not occurred.
Other council members said they shared the desire to meet and work through the issues publicly, while noting constraints the Open Meetings Act and schedules create. Mayor Hoskins responded later in the meeting that sample RFP materials had been circulated and encouraged commissioners to talk among themselves and with staff about preferences while noting a special meeting "ready to act" might still be premature.
Why it matters: Altonheim is implicated in several interrelated decisions raised at the meeting, including site selection for the water reservoir, potential farm use (the OK Farm), community center rebuilding needs and possible sale or redevelopment of portions of the property. What the council said: Multiple commissioners praised recent work on the budget and the village's Springfield lobbying trip; several supported convening an open discussion. Staff and the mayor said sample RFPs and planning documents have been distributed to commissioners and encouraged internal coordination and use of those materials as a starting point for public discussion.
Next steps: Commissioners urged that Altonheim and related long-range facility planning be placed back on an agenda or that a public forum be scheduled so the council can develop shared direction before further real-estate steps occur. No formal motion to require a special meeting was recorded at the session.
