Board affirms district commitment to 'culture of belonging' and approves employee-appreciation week

The La Mesa-Spring Valley School Board voted on March 11 to reaffirm its commitment to a ‘‘culture of belonging’’ for students and families and to approve annual employee appreciation observances.
Board members debated a resolution prompted by recent federal executive orders on immigration enforcement and on diversity, equity and inclusion programs. Speakers emphasized the district’s values and the potential for policy statements to create fear in school communities. A speaker said the executive orders have "created fear in school communities across the nation and run counter to the values and mission of the La Mesa-Spring Valley School District." The board moved, seconded and approved the resolution by voice vote.
Separately, the board unanimously approved an Employee Appreciation resolution recognizing Educators Administration Week (May 5–9), Classified Employees Appreciation Week (May 19–23) and School Administrators Appreciation Week (May 26–30).
Board members encouraged staff to publicize the resolutions and noted school-level activities and the district’s community-school services that support families and students.
