Hillsborough schedules redistricting community meetings as board notes 169-student enrollment decline

District staff announced three community engagement meetings on redistricting and said the board will continue to take public input as it develops plans.
"We are going to be having three community engagement meetings for the community to come out and discuss the district's redistricting plans," Mr. Handler said, listing a morning session on Oct. 16 at Cafe Imanato, an afternoon session on Nov. 13 at the same cafe, and an evening session on Nov. 13 at the board office conference room.
During board comments, Board member Mr. Ho said district enrollment for September totaled 7,043 — a net drop of 169 students. He said most of the decline was at the elementary level (down by 161), Hastings/Middle School (HMS) down by 88, and the high school up by 45. Mr. Ho asked whether Arcbridge's projections and the current first-grade population were being used to estimate next year's kindergarten class; staff said they are considering current first-grade numbers and Arcbridge's projections of future development and birth rates when modeling kindergarten enrollment.
Staff emphasized that projections are not exact and that factors such as initial registration spikes and declining birth rates affect year-to-year counts. The superintendent said the district will recheck first-grade numbers as it finalizes redistricting recommendations and will report back at a later October meeting.
The board encouraged residents to attend the announced meetings and to submit input by email if they cannot attend in person.
