Student urges limits on Chromebook use; district points to Sept. 3 technology workshop

A Chico Unified student told district trustees on Aug. 20 that classroom Chromebooks are contributing to distraction and academic struggles, and urged the board to limit access and use.
“Chromebooks should be limited more in both access and usage because a lot of students have been getting distracted, including myself,” Gabriella Ward, who identified herself as a freshman, said during public comment.
The board said the concern is timely and pointed to an upcoming technology-use policy workshop on Sept. 3 where staff and community members can provide input. The president noted that the workshop is the appropriate venue for detailed feedback on device rules and implementation.
Trustees and staff described how device use has grown since the pandemic and directed Gabby and other community members to the workshop. Superintendent Blake also flagged the workshop as a place to discuss how technology is used in instruction.
District staff said the workshop could inform policy adjustments and that families and students were encouraged to attend and offer feedback. No policy changes were made at the meeting; the board did not take action on device restrictions during the Aug. 20 session.
Next steps: district staff will host the Sept. 3 technology-use workshop to gather community, student and staff input before any formal policy proposal returns to the board.
