Advisory commission adds YPD policy review to agenda, asks for use‑of‑force, de‑escalation and mutual aid documents

At its March 26 meeting the Ypsilanti Police Advisory Commission voted to add a short policy‑review item to a future agenda and asked staff to gather written YPD policies and mutual aid agreements.

A commissioner said they wanted "a brief conversation just about YPD's policies" and listed areas of interest including use‑of‑force, de‑escalation, crisis response and procedures to verify court orders after an incident report raised questions about the handling of a document. Commissioners agreed that the review should focus on policy analysis rather than identifying individuals involved in specific complaints.

The group discussed previous community‑mental‑health training provided "through DWIN," which meeting participants described as a Detroit‑area organization that delivers crisis‑response and mental‑health training. Commissioners requested a short (about five‑minute) presentation so the advisory commission could better understand what officers receive in that training and how often such responses are deployed.

Commissioners also asked staff to locate mutual aid agreements between YPD and county authorities or SWAT and to indicate if written policies do not exist. Roland, a commission staff member, said the mutual aid agreements were likely in a recent packet and staff would attempt to provide the documents or explain why they could not.

The vote to add the policy‑review item passed by voice vote during the meeting. No formal changes to any policy were made that night; the commission directed staff to return with documents and (if possible) a brief trainer presentation at a future meeting.
