The St. Landry Parish School Board and local officials on May 7 honored the Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts (MACA) after the school was named a 2025 National ESEA Distinguished School.
"I am honored to represent our school as a 2025 national ESEA distinguished school for exceptional student performance and academic growth," said Natalie Angell, principal of the Magnet Academy for Cultural Arts in Opelousas. Angell told the board MACA serves 268 students in grades 7—through—12, with about 54% qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch, and credited the school's PBIS and restorative programs and targeted professional development for sustained academic performance.
The mayor presented a proclamation and a ceremonial key to the city in recognition of the school's achievement; the board and audience applauded. The meeting also included a reading of a National School Nurses Day proclamation signed by the governor and the recognition of individual school nurses, including a parish school nurse honored as School Nurse of the Year for her leadership in school health services.
Board members and the superintendent highlighted student credentials and career/technical expansion across the district as examples of continued investment in student opportunity. The recognitions were framed as part of the district's broader work on student supports and academic growth.
