Jay County commissioners approve routine business, proclamation and opioid settlement participation

The Jay County Commissioners met April 27, 2026, in the courthouse auditorium and unanimously approved routine administrative items including the April 13 minutes, the monthly claims and payroll dockets, and the March clerk’s report. President Duane Monroe presided; Commissioners Doug Horn and Chad Aker voted in favor of each motion.
Leland Lemaster, representing the Portland Optimist Club, asked the board to declare a proclamation recognizing “Respect and Appreciation for Law Enforcement Week,” May 3–10, 2026; Doug Horn moved to approve the proclamation as read and the board adopted it unanimously. The proclamation was entered into the record.
County Attorney Wes Schemenaur presented a proposed opioid settlement in which Jay County will participate; Chad Aker moved to approve participation and commissioners voted unanimously to join the settlement. The transcript does not specify settlement amounts for Jay County.
The board approved an emergency Structures Unlimited claim of $16,632 for repairs to the highway salt barn and an unrelated smaller emergency claim of $95 to Elan for the Indiana BMV that had been submitted by the highway department. Commissioners also approved paying $500 now toward a $2,000 invoice for the Upper Wabash River Basin Commission dues, noting only $500 had been budgeted. With no further business, the board adjourned at 6:28 p.m.
