Schley County Accepts Trauma Grant Increase, Backs Paramedic Tuition Support Concept

Schley County’s fire and EMS leadership reported an uptick in grant funding and proposed a paramedic tuition support program at the Nov. 13 commissioners meeting.
Fire/EMS Chief Montgomery said the department responded to 71 EMS calls and 13 fire CAD calls for the reporting period. He proposed a Paramedic Tuition Support & Retention Program that would reimburse tuition after course completion and licensure, pay hours when an employee is in class on a regular shift, and provide transportation support when the employee trains while on shift. Montgomery asked that contracts be reviewed by the county attorney before the county finalizes any agreement.
Montgomery also reported an increase in the county’s Trauma Grant award and identified ambulance items that need replacement; he said the replacement purchases are eligible for 100% reimbursement through the grant. Commissioner Harrison moved to accept the Trauma Grant; Vice Chairman Belcher seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
Commissioners expressed general support for the tuition‑support concept but asked that the county attorney review contract language and any fiscal implications before the program is implemented.
