County reports: water usage up, road repairs, 80 Fire/EMS calls and hurricane-season reminder

Department heads delivered routine operational updates at the May 13 Schley County Board of Commissioners meeting.
Fire/EMS: Chief Montgomery reported 80 total calls for the reporting period, with 12 calls to the Schley Fire Department and 68 calls to Schley EMS. He said the county has received reimbursement from the Assistance to Firefighters Grant (AFG) and that he met with the Georgia Trauma Commission Advisory Council to finalize protocols and medications for Schley EMS. He also said the department is exploring use of broad-spectrum antibiotics in the field.
Water and roads: Water Superintendent Art Barfield reported a monthly water-usage increase of 660,000 gallons, 735 meters read, and 321,750 gallons sold to Andersonville. The department installed seven new water services, repaired a service line at 132 Shiloh Road, replaced a pressure regulator, and created one new 911 address. Barfield said hydrant testing by Sumter Fire caused dirty water and that staff flushed lines on Shiloh and Tallent Store roads to resolve the issue.
Road maintenance activity included right-of-way mowing that began May 5, hauling sand and dirt to repair wet spots and mudholes on several roads, replacing driveway culverts, grading dirt roads as weather permitted, and clearing beaver dams from culverts. Barfield noted beaver activity at a pond on Frank Roberts Road and suggested leaving the pipe in place now that the pond returned to its regular level; he proposed discussing the matter again at the next meeting.
Emergency management and pending engineering work: County Manager and EMA Director Douglas Jamieson reminded the board that hurricane season begins June 1, reported 15 zoning inspections and 30 permits, and said the county is awaiting engineer reports and recommendations on Holloway and Mt. Zion roads.
