Board approves consent contracts; radiography requirement for I Smile at School may reduce program reach

On March 25 the Black Hawk County Board of Health approved the consent agenda covering several contracts and renewals, including an amendment to the Child & Adolescent Health Oral Health program that introduces a mandatory radiography requirement for the I Smile at School initiative.
Kaitlin Emrich reviewed the consent agenda items and flagged a mandatory amendment (item C) that will require county staff to adopt radiography equipment, adjust clinical protocols and provide additional staff training. Emrich told the board this change may reduce the number of children the program can serve because of increased space and time demands.
Board member Melissa Clark moved and Vice‑Chair Rosario Garcia Fino seconded approval of consent items A–D; the motion carried. The board asked staff to report back over the summer with updates on radiography implementation progress and challenges.
Other consent items approved included a sub‑contract for 1st Five Peer Consultation (Dr. Samantha Bissen), immunization-services contract amendments with Iowa HHS and a renewal for septic pumper inspections with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
