Drew Patnau, Nantucket’s director of public works, told the Select Board the town’s annual spring road program will begin Monday, April 6 with contractor Victor Brandon and subcontractor Keading performing roadway milling on sections of Pulpus Road, Cliff Road, York Street and New Lane, with additional sections to be added pending infrastructure inspections.
Patnau said milling will occupy much of the week and crews will follow with overlay paving on scheduled sections, including Lovers Lane and Monahansett Road, weather permitting. He explained a planned sequence: milling, paving, then the pavement‑marking contractor arrives beginning June 9 to paint center lines, fog lines, stop bars and crosswalks islandwide. Sidewalk improvement work and targeted brick sidewalk installation (Gay Street and Federal Street sections) were also described.
Patnau and the chair addressed recent public concerns about pothole repairs: he said a pallet of cold‑patch material was lost in transit and has since arrived, and plant outages have delayed binder‑course paving by a week or two; crews are “playing catch‑up” and the town appreciates public patience.
Board members asked about an in‑house shoulder‑sand program; Patnau said the DPW will address higher‑priority shoulder areas in‑house to avoid contractor costs. He also confirmed coordination with the sewer director to address manhole covers and catch basin frames in Sparks Ave, Orange St and Pleasant St.
