Patrick County School Board honors dozens of students for Beta Club awards and scholarships

The Patrick County School Board on March 17 recognized students across the district for achievements at state Beta Club competitions, district speakers said.
District staff opened the presentation by praising the schools’ Beta programs and saying the district has placed 10th in the state repeatedly over the last three years, then introduced Annie Baker, principal of Stewart Elementary School, to begin acknowledgments. "We are 10th in the state repeatedly the last 3 years, and this is the reason why," the staff member said.
Annie Baker introduced Stewart Elementary's sponsors and named multiple student placings, including Lydia Bowman (seventh-grade language arts), Lucas Black (sixth-grade health and PE, second place), Carter Foley (sixth-grade U.S. history, second place), Paige Ragsdale (poetry, third place) and Lucas Wheeler (first in woodworking and best in show for visual arts). "We are so proud of each of you," Baker said while presenting the awards.
Dr. Donahue of Hardin Reynolds introduced that school's Beta sponsors, Heather Burch and Jessica Woollum. "We had three kiddos place," Jessica Woollum said, naming Etta Owens (performing arts), Sarah White (spelling) and Alice Terry (pottery).
At the high school, Principal Perry thanked sponsors and district coordinators and listed numerous winners across academics, visual arts and quiz bowl. Perry said the district sent 73 students to the Beta convention this year and credited Mr. Turchek as the district Beta coordinator.
The board also heard that Callie Wood and Jacob Lester qualified among roughly 5,000 applicants for national Beta scholarships and were "amongst the top 100 applicants," the transcript states; the meeting record says they will receive at least $1,000 and may be eligible for additional awards.
Students and sponsors received applause from the audience as the board recognized group and individual accomplishments across junior and senior Beta divisions. The presentation was provided as part of the meeting’s agenda; there was no formal board action tied to the recognitions.
The board proceeded to other agenda items after the recognition portion of the meeting.
