Harlingen renames municipal auditorium for longtime dance teacher Gloria G. Canales

On April 1 the Harlingen City Commission voted to rename the Harlingen Municipal Auditorium the Gloria G. Canales Auditorium, honoring a lifetime of local cultural work by Canales, who taught traditional Mexican folkloric dance for more than four decades and represented the community at state, national and international events.
Connie Canales Bettis, Canales’s daughter, read a family statement and told the commission, “On behalf of our family, we feel the city of Harlingen should name the auditorium after my mother, Gloria G. Canales,” and described the cultural and educational legacy her mother built through students and public performances. Commissioners praised Canales’s community contributions and approved the renaming unanimously.
Staff said they will schedule a formal presentation ceremony and follow-up with logistics for updated signage and program materials. The commission discussed protocol for naming public facilities and encouraged other commissioners to propose additional, non-disruptive ways to honor local figures (notably noting the disruption that renaming roads can cause for residents).
