Recreation staff outline carnival, parade and teen-program plans; tickets and dates announced

Recreation staff briefed the council March 11 on upcoming events and ongoing youth programming, asking the community to participate and noting several dates and program details.
Neighborhood counselor Christian Rodriguez described ongoing sports leagues (youth rugby and age-group divisions), a 'Y-L elite' program offering a different sport daily, monthly teen workshops that draw roughly 40 participants, and a Young Men’s/Young Women’s League in partnership with local elementary schools and ABCUSD mental-health staff. Rodriguez said the teen summit will be held May 16 from 10 a.m.–1 p.m. at the community center, and a teen camping trip is planned for July 15–18 with space for about 30 teens. He reported receiving 19 youth and 13 adult scholarship applications and noted staff are vetting applicants for awards that will be presented at a combined scholarship dinner with Artesia High School.
Events coordinator Eric Leon reviewed the carnival and parade programming (April 17–18). He described entertainment lineups, a special-guest artist appearance at youth night, and the parade route starting near Fetty Middle School on 214th Street, running on Norwalk Boulevard and Carson Street to Ferguson (about 1.25 miles; start time 11 a.m.; approximate duration 1–1¼ hours). Leon said 36 parade entries were confirmed at the time of the meeting and reminded participants that pre-sale sheets of 10 ride tickets are sold for $30; the pre-sale price will not be honored the day of the event. He also noted the parade registration deadline is April 9.
Recreation manager Juan Serrano described teen-center hours, game-room drop-in services, new STEM programming and a 21-page recreation handbook and program guide that will be mailed to households later in the month. Council members asked whether materials will be available in Spanish; staff said the guide is currently only in English but they will explore translation options.
Staff also announced a gym re-grand opening community event on Saturday, March 14 beginning at 10 a.m., with a free basketball clinic and informational booths, and an Easter egg hunt on April 4 at Ferguson Elementary.
