At the start of the council's public‑hearing segment, borough staff described the 2026 Green Acres planning‑incentive land‑acquisition grant application for 197 White Corp Avenue, a two‑acre parcel (block 136, lot 6.02) the borough purchased in 2024 for passive recreation.
Staff said the borough is seeking the program's maximum funding ($700,000) with up to $20,000 allowed for soft costs; if awarded, the funds would be used to reduce the borough's principal carrying costs. Survey responses collected from residents informed a preliminary list of uses staff is considering, including a walking track, shaded seating, a gazebo, a water feature, community garden plots and a small playground. Council and members of the public also suggested adding a dog park and raised garden beds for accessible planting.
After a brief public comment period, the council voted to authorize submission of the Green Acres application. Clerk-recorded roll call showed the motion (by Joe; second by Katie) passed with recorded “yes” votes from Mr. Bren (listed on the record as voting 'yes'), Miss Sakola Drake, Mr. Martinella, Mr. Richie, Miss Smith and Miss Wingake.
Why it matters: Green Acres grants are a major state program for land preservation and park development; if awarded, the funding would help pay down acquisition costs and support future park improvements. Staff said the property is restricted to passive recreation and that additional park development funding opportunities will be pursued with Green Acres and Bergen County once the borough completes a planning process.
Next steps: Staff will finalize and submit the Green Acres application and continue community outreach while pursuing additional grant opportunities for site improvements and amenities if the planning award is approved.
