The Board of Aldermen approved a $690,000 construction contract with Classic Turf Company LLC for renovations to Chase Park tennis courts.
During public comment and committee discussion resident Paul Condash urged the Board to table the project and instead convert the space for pickleball courts, citing national participation figures and arguing the city would get greater use for the money. “Pickleball is the fastest growing sport in the United States...I would like to see this item tabled,” Condash said.
Alderman Zimmerman asked staff whether the planned work would support pickleball. Department staff explained the renovation will include lines for pickleball inside the tennis courts — an approach already used at Kennedy and Fon Park — allowing the courts to be used for both tennis and pickleball without fully replacing the surface.
The intergovernmental committee recommended the contract and the Board approved it by voice vote. The project was presented as part of broader efforts to update recreational assets downtown.
What happens next: The contractor will proceed with renovation work. The Board did not provide a construction schedule in the meeting record.
