Board hears first read of literacy policy aligned with HB156 requiring "science of reading" instruction

The board was told the change will require additional professional learning and move reading-specific curriculum and training into middle and secondary grades.
The presenter explained that while some vendors market programs as "science of reading," the district will vet curriculum and professional learning through its adoption processes. The policy also directs that instruction for English-language learners include evidence-based practices for biliteracy, differentiation and culturally and linguistically responsive instruction, the presenter said.
Because this was a first read, no vote was taken. Board members asked clarifying questions about practical meaning; the presenter said the district already has professional development and teacher endorsements in reading and will continue rolling training forward.
