Under the adopted language, devices at elementary and middle schools must be turned off and stored in a student's backpack or in a secure location during the school day. A board member asked whether the rule means devices are not permitted on campus at all; the presenter clarified the policy requires devices be powered off and stored rather than used in class.
"For the elementary ones ... must be turned off and stored in their backpack or in a secure location during the" school day, the presenter said during discussion. The board approved the policy by voice vote with no recorded opposition in the transcript.
Officials said the change responds to recent state anti-distraction legislation and is intended to limit classroom interruptions while allowing districts to define secure storage and enforcement locally. The policy will be entered into the district's policy manual and applied for the coming school year.
