Sunset Beach to mark Tree City USA status with Arbor Day planting Friday

The Town of Sunset Beach Tree Board confirmed plans for an Arbor Day ceremony tied to the town's newly received Tree City USA designation, with a plaque presentation and a ceremonial planting scheduled for Friday at Fire Station One at 11 a.m.
Board members said the fire chief will lead the pledge, the mayor will read the Arbor Day proclamation and several board members and town staff will take part in planting a butterfly magnolia. Amy Goodrich, the town's events coordinator, is coordinating logistics and the press has been invited for photos.
The ceremony is intended to serve both as a celebration and as documentation for the Tree City USA application and annual reporting. "I'll welcome everyone, give a history of Arbor Day and talk about the Tree City USA designation," the Chair said while reviewing the event program.
Members noted the planting is modest in scale but symbolically important for the board's 2026 objectives, and said they will continue public-education activities this year, including a possible fall workshop and children's events in the summer. The board also plans to advertise the Tree City signage already installed at at least one entrance to town.
The board asked volunteers to attend and expected representatives from the Environmental Resource Committee and town council to participate. The planting and proclamation will be included in the board's annual Tree City USA documentation.
The board will recap the ceremony at its next meeting and incorporate the event into its executive summary and outreach materials for 2026.
