The San Bernardino City Unified School District board on Feb. 3 presented certificates of appreciation to crossing guards and heard remarks from the district communications office and the crossing guard company.
"Although crossing guards are not SBCUSD employees, our crossing guards are often the first friendly faces our students see in the morning and the last ones they see before heading home," Communications Manager Maria Garcia told the board as she introduced the recognition. The program included remarks from Robert Durice, team manager with the crossing guard company, who introduced local supervisors and visiting staff.
Board member Mr. Tilman thanked guards and noted the district covers the full cost of crossing guards rather than splitting it with cities—"we have new board members here, but our district is one of the few districts that pay for the total cost of crossing guards," he said—so the positions remain consistently staffed. The board recognized about 30 guards in the meeting while staff noted the district relies on more than 60 crossing guards systemwide.
The ceremony included group photos and certificates and the board and superintendent expressed appreciation for the guards' daily role protecting students and families in varied weather and traffic conditions.
