Board votes to rescind equity policy after lengthy debate over wording and symbolism

Public commenter Joyce Henry urged the board not to remove the policy during the public comment period, warning that "the elimination of this policy gives district students and families the opposite message regardless of the intention of the board and district leadership." She said the policy matters to marginalized students and families.
During board debate several trustees said the policy's wording risked conflating "equity" with guaranteed identical outcomes. One trustee described past instances where programs or class offerings were changed in the name of equity and argued that the district already provides equal opportunities through other policies and administrative regulations. Other trustees said the policy has symbolic importance and reassured vulnerable communities of the district's commitments.
Staff told the board that many protections and supports cited in the equity policy are also codified elsewhere in district policy and in site practice. Trustees discussed transparency and the process by which the item was placed on the consent agenda.
A motion to rescind policy 0415 passed on a recorded vote (4-1). Trustees who supported rescission said they would continue to ensure the district's students have access to programs and supports; trustees opposed said they feared the symbolic consequence for marginalized students and families.
The board did not vote to remove protections described elsewhere in district policy; staff said those programs and administrative regulations would remain in effect.
