PAUSD reports rising enrollment in higher-level 9th-grade math but trustees seek outcome data

Palo Alto Unified officials told the board Oct. 14 that ninth-grade course enrollment has trended toward geometry and higher-level math over the past four years, but both trustees and public commenters pushed for outcome-focused data to ensure students are prepared.
Dr. Lopez presented SB 359 placement data spanning 2022–23 through 2025–26 showing increased enrollment in geometry and above for most student groups, and reported that roughly 10% of this year’s ninth graders were enrolled in Algebra I, with a subset earning D’s or lower who may need remediation. Lopez emphasized that the report’s scope is placement only and recommended follow-up on preparedness metrics.
Public commenters, citing CAASPP results, warned that many students — especially socioeconomically disadvantaged Latino students — remained below grade level on state assessments and that placement in higher-level courses without adequate preparation can harm the cohorts most at risk. Trustees asked staff for cohort analyses, middle-school intervention progress and a December update tied to the district’s math goals.
The board did not take formal action on SB 359; staff said they will continue to analyze preparatory work in middle schools and provide a fuller data package to the board later in the year.
