Lancaster district honors staff and spotlights New Vista Middle School improvements

The Lancaster School Board opened its meeting with the Pledge of Allegiance and a series of recognitions before turning to curriculum updates.
Assembly Member Juan Leo presented a certificate recognizing a district school’s inclusion on the 2025 California Honor Roll, calling it “an extraordinary achievement” for sustained growth and student preparation. The board later honored three employees with the district’s ASES "ACES" awards for service: Lucas Smith, Casey Hamburger and Eric Gold.
New Vista Middle School principal Mr. Oy Johnson and assistant principal Shaina Moya described improvements in campus climate and academic outcomes. "Over the past three years, we've seen a positive and measurable shift in our campus climate," Mr. Johnson said, noting increased attendance and stronger collaboration among teachers. He credited campus activities and ASB efforts for helping students feel connected.
Students who are active in ASB described lunchtime activities, pep rallies and eligibility rules tied to a 2.0 GPA requirement that leaders say help motivate attendance and academic performance. "We have lunch activities and pep rallies which give students more positive outlets," said student Laya, an ASB member. Jenny, the ASB representative, said the events and partnerships have helped make the campus feel more welcoming.
The presentation also highlighted external partnerships that support instruction and enrichment, including UCLA Center X professional development, a Prisms VR pilot for 3D engagement in math, study‑smart tutoring and mentoring programs identified as contributors to recent gains in ELA and math CAST results.
Board members congratulated students and staff on the recognitions and commended the range of programs presented. The board then proceeded to the district’s business agenda.
