Board appoints alternative education principal and authorizes settlement agreements after extended meeting

The board voted to appoint Sarah Kennedy Garcia as alternative education principal for High Desert Premier Academy and Apple Valley Virtual Academy, on range 14, column 1 of the certificated management salary schedule, 210 base duty days, effective Oct. 16, 2025. That appointment was read into the record when trustees returned from closed session.
In closed session the board also authorized the director of risk management to execute proposed settlement agreements in two litigation matters (read out publicly as case numbers CIVBS242409 and CIVVS2500223). The clerk reported both authorizations were passed unanimously.
The board further approved a personnel action reported in closed session: the involuntary demotion of an employee identified as employee no. 2592, effective Aug. 7, 2025. Trustees voted on those items in closed session and the clerk read the actions when the meeting returned to open session.
Other procedural votes during the evening included the board’s unanimous motion to go into closed session earlier in the meeting and later a board decision to extend the meeting past the usual 10:30 p.m. adjournment by unanimous roll call to finish business (the board set a not‑to‑exceed time during the meeting).
