The City of Stuart Commission approved an amendment to the city’s 2011 funding interlocal with Martin County to rescind a previously designated 1.97‑acre commercial carve‑out and fold that parcel into the Haney Creek Watershed Preserve. Mayor Collins said the city has historically used other income sources to maintain the preserve and that no acceptable commercial development proposals emerged for the carve‑out.
City staff and Council discussed minor edits to the draft amendment; staff said the change requires county concurrence and, if the county agrees, the amendment would be placed on the ballot for the Aug. 18, 2026 referendum.
The motion to adopt the amended resolution carried by roll call vote: Vice Mayor Reid — yes; Commissioner Rich — no; Commissioner Gobi — yes; Commissioner Clark — yes; Mayor Collins — yes. The amendment will be forwarded to Martin County for its own approval before referendum language is finalized.
