Yukon adopts ordinance expanding misuse-of-911 enforcement, approves emergency clause

The Yukon City Council voted to adopt Ordinance No. 1492, amending the city code to add section 74-39 addressing misuse of the 911 emergency telephone system and certain 10-digit lines that can interrupt service. The police chief told the council the change was prompted by callers who abused non-911 public lines and disrupted emergency operations.
Council members recorded that the penalty in the code is a $500 fine plus $71 in fees. After discussion, the council also voted to approve the ordinance27s emergency clause so the provision would take immediate effect in the interest of public health and safety.
The measure was presented as a targeted amendment to enable enforcement where callers are interfering with critical communications. The police chief observed that existing ordinance language covered abuse of the 911 console but did not explicitly reach misuse of the 10-digit lines; the amendment closes that gap and authorizes enforcement action.
The council voted without recorded opposition to adopt the ordinance and the emergency clause. No further implementation timetable was presented at the meeting.
