Parents and members raise concerns about school meals; district and vendor pledge changes and subcommittee review
Summary
Committee members and parents raised concerns about portion sizes, late-lunch shortages, food quality and limited time to eat. Wilson's (district food service) described menu surveys, a food planner feedback tool, a salad‑bar pilot and more scratch cooking; the committee referred the item to a cafeteria subcommittee for follow-up.

Miss Babcock opened a committee discussion on March 2 with parent reports about cafeteria service across the district, saying some older students feel portions and selections are insufficient while younger students sometimes do not eat what is offered.
Joe Amenti, the district manager for Wilson's food service, and the site manager (transcribed as Mr. Damasio) responded. Amenti said staff have begun student surveys with school councils and are encouraging families and students to use the FD Meal Planner feedback tool to rate meals. He told the committee that students who remain hungry after their meal may return for a second portion of fruits or vegetables and that Wilson's plans new offerings — including a salad bar pilot at the high school, expanded rotisserie and more scratch-cooked entrees — to increase filling options.
Committee members pressed for clarity about portions. A Wilson's representative explained that portions are regulated by federal guidelines (USDA-calibrated calories and protein specifications) and that some entree choices are heavier and more filling than others; the vendor noted production records are kept to determine which items are hits and which will be removed from menus.
Several members expressed concern about limited eating time and students unable to get second helpings if lines are short or cleanup begins; staff said breakfast-after-the-bell and nurse-office options exist for some cases and that the vendor will meet with student councils at middle schools in addition to existing high-school outreach.
After extended discussion the committee voted to refer the cafeteria item to the cafeteria subcommittee for a focused review with Wilson's, school nutrition leads and student representatives. Chairperson Hurley and others asked that the subcommittee look at: communicating the FD Meal Planner to families, ensuring equitable access for middle-school students who report running out of specials late in lunch periods, and finding ways to make sure no child leaves hungry.
What happens next: The cafeteria subcommittee will hold follow-up meetings with nutrition leads, Wilson's staff and student councils, then report recommendations back to the full committee.
