Town seeks nuisance-abatement agreement with Super 8 Motel after reported crime

Town staff reported that a December meeting with Super 8 Motel property owners produced a proposed memorandum of understanding intended to reduce crime and nuisance problems at the motel. The manager said the MOU would require stricter registration protocols for guests, parking passes, enhanced trespass enforcement coordination with police and a restriction on renting to guests within a 30-mile radius except during emergencies.
"The biggest being ... no longer renting to anyone local. So a 30 mile radius unless it's an extreme issue like a fire or natural disaster," the Town Manager said, describing the provision the town presented to owners. He said several owners who attended were receptive and at least one present was active in day-to-day hotel management.
The manager said the document has not yet been fully executed because some owners are out of the country; staff reported initial signs of improved activity at the property, but said time will tell whether the MOU's measures sufficiently reduce problems. The council asked staff to continue coordination with police and the town attorney and to seek full execution of the agreement.
