KNOXVILLE — During the public comment period, Renee Christian, who identified herself as homeless in Knoxville, described a series of reliability and safety problems she said she has experienced on the transit system and said a lost backpack contained essential survival items and court documents.
"My name is Renee Christian. I'm homeless in Knoxville," she told the board before describing multiple incidents: she said she has ridden buses that broke down because of missing fluids, had her bicycle bent when racks were not secured, waited for replacement vehicles after buses failed to depart and said electric buses have started trips without sufficient charge. She said drivers sometimes skip stops to make timepoints and that inconsistent detour notices and late routes have cost her employment: "I've had to quit a job and turn down two other jobs because I cannot rely on the bus to be accurate."
Christian recounted a March 14 incident at the Cumberland and Market stop when she said three scheduled buses did not pass between 10:30 and 10:55 p.m., after which she waited and boarded a late bus only to realize she left her backpack on board. She said she attempted to recover the pack, which she described as "my survival gear" containing her hammock, money, keys, phone and documents needed for court, but staff said they could not confirm its location until Monday and Christian said it then "disappeared." She declined staff offers to speak with CAT after her remarks.
Staff told Christian they could have CAT staff speak to her after the meeting; she declined. The board did not vote on any related items during the session.
Next steps: staff indicated staff would follow up to investigate service incidents and the lost property report, but Christian explicitly declined an immediate staff discussion at the meeting.
