High school Mini-THON gain administrative approval for overnight event after safety and clearance conditions
Summary
Students told the board they have more than 200 participants signed up and raised over $1,500 in less than five days for a Mini-THON overnight on April 17–18; administrators said AR 707 limits events to 10 p.m. by default but granted administrative approval with a professional staff member on site and clearance rules for extended community participation.

Shayna Williams, a senior and president of Mini-THON, told the board that student organizers raised more than $1,500 in fewer than five days through the Four Diamonds Mini-THON app and that the club has raised roughly $20,000 as an ongoing effort to support families affected by childhood cancer.
Williams asked for permission to hold an overnight Mini-THON event from 6 p.m. April 17 until 6 a.m. April 18 and said the event will feature standing activities, music, dancing and family stories. She said a little over 200 students had signed up for the overnight portion at the time of the presentation.
Administrators explained district policy AR 707 generally requires events to conclude by 10 p.m. but that administrative approval can be granted if a professional staff member is present for the duration. The district also described a two-hour community window for visitors that does not require background clearances; staff who remain beyond that window must have clearances. An administrator confirmed an advisor has committed to oversee the event and that the advisor’s formal appointment would appear on the next board agenda.
School staff offered to promote the fundraiser via the district website and communications channels and asked organizers to provide event and clearance documentation for administrative records. The board indicated no further approval was required at that time so long as the administrative conditions were met.
What happens next: the district will receive required documentation (advisor confirmation, evidence of staff presence, and clearance information) and will publicize the fundraiser via the district newsletter and communications channels.
