During council reports, Councilwoman K. Patrice Williams alerted residents that the Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District has begun a Prop 218 process proposing stepped rate increases over five years that would raise a typical residential charge from about $51.62 to roughly $78.20.
"Right now is the time that if you oppose it, uh you need to let the sewer district know," Williams said, describing the legal protest period that accompanies Prop 218 rate actions and encouraging residents to submit written protests or appear at the district hearing.
Williams said the sewer district serves about 33,000 customers in Fairfield and Suisun City and that roughly half of those users would have to file formal protests to prevent the change under the Proposition 218 process. She advised residents to visit the sewer district’s website to comment and to attend the public hearing when the district sets the date.
The council did not take formal action on the sewer-district proposal; Williams presented the item as an informational alert and urged public engagement. Staff did not provide a schedule for the sewer-district hearing at this meeting; Williams said the district will post hearing information and that residents may also contact HSD@fairfield.ca.gov for city outreach resources.
What’s next: Residents who want to protest should follow the Fairfield-Suisun Sewer District’s Prop 218 instructions and be prepared to file during the official protest period or attend the announced public hearing.
