Walton County board honors Hobbs family, students and volunteers at recognition ceremony

At a meeting that led with recognitions, Superintendent Underwood announced 'Hobbs Way' for a local family and the board honored student reading and athletic achievements and several community volunteers with Walton Impact and Why Walton awards.
Superintendent Underwood opened the recognitions portion of the Walton County Board of Education meeting by presenting the Hobbs family and announcing that the street across from the board office will be named "Hobbs Way" in cooperation with the City of Monroe and Lee Ryle. "To me, Hobbs Way stands for integrity," Underwood said as he described the family's long service to the district.
The board then recognized a series of student and staff accomplishments. Dallas Davis called forward Baker Elementary's reading team, noting it finished first in district and region and placed second at the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl state competition; Davis read the students' names and thanked coaches and families. A Loganville Middle School representative reported that the Red Devil Reading Bowl team made the district's first trip to state and finished fourth on March 21. Matt McDonald recognized Loganville High School's Young Georgia Author winner Victoria Swords and state swim champion Parker Hebert and diver Gabriel Ladone for academic and athletic achievements.
Superintendent Underwood and school representatives presented Walton Impact Awards to community volunteers and staff: Patrick Meadows introduced Pastor John Thornton for community service contributions; Jennifer Squires honored Doug and Heather Minton for volunteer work at Youth Elementary; David Todd recognized Carmen Donaldson, YMS PTO treasurer; and Lindsey Allen honored Joe Sparks of Walnut Grove High School for mentoring and coaching. Patrice Broughton presented the April Why Walton award to Bay Creek principal Dr. Niles Davis for operational improvements and community engagement.
The recognitions concluded with a brief acknowledgment of the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA) representatives in attendance and a short break before the board business meeting.
