Harrisburg approves design change order for Hickory Ridge sidewalk; town cost ~$5,900

The Town of Harrisburg council approved a change order to the Hickory Ridge Road sidewalk design contract to account for newly discovered drainage, bridge and utility coordination needs identified in field surveys and North Carolina Department of Transportation review.
Staff said the additional design work includes drainage adjustments, water-line encasement at the bridge structure, and coordination with Duke Energy to relocate poles that would otherwise conflict with the proposed pedestrian bridge footprint. Because the project is grant-funded, town staff said roughly 80% of the change order cost will be reimbursed; the town’s net fiscal impact for this change order was estimated at about $5,900.
The design package includes a 10-foot-wide pedestrian refuge at the Hickory Ridge–Veterans intersection and a rectangular rapid flashing beacon to improve pedestrian safety for students crossing near Bridge Point. Project designers and NC DOT have reviewed prior submittals and requested the additional work during the 30%–75% design process, staff said.
Council voted to approve the change order and authorize the design team to proceed so the project can move to final plans and construction bidding.
