Benton City council approves power, pedestrian crossing and chip‑seal contracts

Benton City Council voted April 15 to approve three infrastructure actions covering utilities, pedestrian safety and pavement maintenance.
The council authorized Resolution 2025‑8, a developers agreement with Benton PUD to install a new pole and run underground electrical service to the city’s Lift Station 5 as part of the lift‑station upgrade. Council members clarified that the new line will be underground from the new pole to the lift station and that the work is consistent with the city’s franchise obligations.
Councilors also approved Resolution 2025‑19, a construction and maintenance agreement with the Washington State Department of Transportation to install five pedestrian crossings with flashing beacons on SR‑225. Under the agreement the city will source construction and later maintain certain components, including beacon batteries and flashing equipment; WSDOT will coordinate striping and work within its right‑of‑way.
On pavement maintenance, the council awarded the remaining qualifying citywide chip‑seal work (Resolution 2025‑20) to Central Washington Asphalt Inc., noting the bids came in approximately 10% under budget and that the Transportation Improvement Board (TIB) is funding the project. Staff said a map and resident notifications will be published before work begins to reduce public complaints about loose rock and temporary impacts.
Each motion was adopted by the council during the regular meeting; staff indicated construction scheduling will follow contractor availability and grant reimbursement processing.
The council’s action advances planned lift‑station improvements, pedestrian safety work on a state route, and scheduled pavement maintenance; staff will return with contract documents, schedules and public‑notification materials.
