Jackson County Veterans Affairs reports 270 February interactions and $876,344 in benefits; Senate file 2466 cleared the Senate

Ruth, a representative from the Iowa Department of Veterans Affairs working in Jackson County, briefed the Board of Supervisors on local veterans services at the March 17 meeting. "We had a total for February of 270 interactions," Ruth told the board, and she provided a breakdown: 143 phone calls, 35 emails and 62 in-person visits. The office filed 61 of the 97 open claims and reported 10 new claims in February, along with appeals and other filings.
Ruth said 431 veterans and/or their eligible dependents are receiving $876,344 in benefits (reported for January) and noted two partial decisions during the monthly period. She also said Senate File 2466, which concerns county veterans service offices, passed the Iowa Senate on March 10 and is expected to move to the Iowa House. "The Senate file 2466…did pass the Senate on March 10th," she said.
Ruth reviewed outreach plans including a March 30 claims clinic at the Sabula VFW, an April 20 Bellevue Community/Senior Center Q&A and an April 22 Senior Wellness Expo appearance, and noted staff will attend spring trainings and a national conference in Reno in June. She also reminded the board the Veterans Affairs Commission will hold elections for chairperson and secretary beginning July 2026, per the board's prior motion.
The board moved to accept and place on file the Veterans Affairs Commission minutes from Feb. 11, 2026; the motion carried by voice vote. Ruth and the board discussed outreach to younger veterans and public notice plans for openings on boards and commissions.
What happens next: outreach events and training are scheduled through June, and the board will host elections for VA commission leadership beginning July 2026.
