Gilroy public works reports new modular restroom, sidewalk repairs and tree work at multiple parks

Deputy Public Works Director Matt Jones updated the commission on facility maintenance across the park system.
Jones showed a timeline and photos of a recently delivered CXT modular restroom for Los Animas Park, noting the building was set in a single afternoon after several months of in-house site preparation. He said the original rough budget estimate for the restroom project was approximately $350,000 and that the delivered building cost about $214,000, with additional costs for irrigation controls and concrete work. He said staff expects the restroom to open around April 10.
Staff also described sidewalk and trip-hazard remediation carried out by in‑house crews: removal and replacement of damaged slabs, installation of root barriers and replanting with species better suited to paved conditions (Chinese pistache was cited). Staff explained those repairs were intended to reduce trip-and-fall claims and prolong path-of-travel life in high-use areas.
Commissioners noted ongoing maintenance needs at amphitheaters and other park features and asked staff to coordinate further on scheduling and funding. Jones said many repairs are being coordinated between parks and streets crews and that funding, design choices and staffing levels affect the pace of work.
Staff will continue remedial repairs and report back to the commission as needed.
