Next Generation board revisits waste‑diversion review and Project Downtown as possible priorities

At its April 2 meeting, Littleton City’s Next Generation Advisory Board discussed two recurring topics from last year — the city’s waste‑diversion review and Project Downtown — and considered how the advisory group might contribute recommendations to Council.

Members noted that the waste‑diversion review could lead to larger operational changes such as a single‑hauler contract and that such changes raise resident concerns about choice, truck traffic and road wear. They emphasized the need to gather a range of local views, especially younger residents who are underrepresented at regular meetings, and suggested working through existing community partners (ACC, local high schools, Littleton Young Professionals) to solicit input.

The board also discussed a draft prioritization letter on Project Downtown that had been prepared last year but not sent to Council. Staff offered to circulate previous letters and materials so members could review them and decide whether to finalize and transmit a recommendation. Chris Nelson said he would send the past documents to the board for consideration.

Members warned against planning major public events without adequate staffing and reach; past attempts to run stand‑alone engagement events yielded low turnout. Instead, they favored integrating outreach into existing programs and leaning on individual members to champion specific projects during the board year.

The group agreed to include Project Downtown and waste‑diversion updates among items to consider on the May agenda, and to identify what staff presentations or data would help the board provide useful recommendations to Council.
