Public commenters press board on cheer recognition and special-education finance reform

Michelle Thomas spoke first about support for the Grandville cheer program, recounting several home invitationals, a large pink-out meet and postseason competitions where she said administrative presence was minimal. She told the board that cheerleaders devote extensive time to practices, camps and community service and that ‘‘their presence is noticed and it matters,’’ urging the board to ensure leadership is visible at events that recognize students’ achievements.
Kayleie Jans encouraged board members to review the Michigan Special Education Finance Reform Blueprint (published online) designed to address the achievement gap and funding inequality. Jans also thanked the board for hosting listening sessions tied to the superintendent search and praised Mark Palmer’s work on those sessions.
Board members moved to close the public portion of the meeting and proceed to a previously announced closed session.
