Board accepts audit; district pauses Bay project after asbestos finding, schedules special meeting

Representatives from RS Abrams presented the district's annual external audit for fiscal 2024-25 and reported an unmodified (clean) opinion, no material weaknesses, and a single recommendation for strengthening internal controls. The audit committee voted to accept the financial statements and the board moved to receive and file the report with the New York State Education Department; the motion carried at the meeting.
Auditor Ali Betaglia summarized audit findings and told trustees the district's unassigned fund balance was 3.91% and that an unmodified opinion was issued. The audit acceptance motion directed the assistant superintendent for business to file a certified copy of the motion and the audit with the state office of audit.
In capital-projects business, district officials reported progress on high-school field and grandstand work and upcoming HVAC and theatrical upgrades. During excavation work on the Bay Elementary extension, contractors found material that tested positive for asbestos; work was stopped and state-required notifications and abatement planning began. District officials said the finding will delay the Bay project and that a special public meeting to review contractor plans and environmental assessments is scheduled for Nov. 13 at Bay's gymnasium.
Trustees took the audit motion and approved the filing; the board did not vote on the Bay project at the meeting but committed to present abatement plans at the special meeting.
