Why it matters: The Mary Makers Club, founded in 1926, limits membership to 35 and focuses on mentorship, civic engagement and scholarship support at area institutions, including Ohio State University, Columbus College of Art & Design and Columbus State. The club’s scholarship model targets students who are already enrolled but need support to finish college.
Dr. George Barnett said the centennial fundraising effort leverages a benefactor who matches gifts to Ohio State, doubling the club’s impact, and invited the public to a centennial event on Aug. 29 at the downtown Hilton. President O'Grady and Commissioners praised the club’s longevity and community work; the board offered a resolution honoring the group and posed for a photo with members.
The board’s recognition was ceremonial; no county appropriation for the club’s campaign was requested or approved during the session. The Mary Makers Club’s outreach and scholarship work remain private philanthropic activity partnered informally with community leaders.
