Superintendent Kyle told the Liberty County School Board on March 10 that he will not seek re-election, saying his "season has come to an end." He told board members he has "985 days" left in his current term and reflected on the demands and scope of the job, from day-to-day operations to large budget and policy responsibilities.
Kyle described the superintendent role as the district’s executive lead and urged the board not to blur lines between the board’s legislative role and administration duties. "When you start blurring that line ... the superintendent leads and recommends those policies," he said, adding that much of his work — from handling personnel issues to managing fleet and insurance questions — happens outside the public meetings.
The superintendent also pointed to fiscal discipline and transparency during his tenure, saying he has worked to brief the board in advance of issues and remove items from agendas when members expressed reservations. He thanked staff, named several colleagues and asked the board to continue close coordination during the upcoming budgeting cycle.
Board members responded with appreciation and asked that the superintendent remain engaged during the transition period. The announcement came amid a broader governance discussion at the meeting about whether individual board members should have more formal ability to place items on meeting agendas.
The superintendent’s statement does not create an immediate vacancy; no candidate filings or timeline for a successor were presented at the meeting. The board plans a budget workshop and follow-up discussions this month; any next steps about leadership transitions or recruitment were not discussed in detail at the meeting.
