Police report: Burlingame logs 10 January collisions; two were pedestrian-involved

Burlingame Police Sergeant Orloff presented the department's January collision summary to the Traffic Safety & Parking Commission, focusing on public-roadway collisions and pedestrian incidents.
Orloff said the public safety logs initially listed 10 collisions for January but clarified that two occurred on private property, leaving eight incidents involving public roadways. Of those, six were vehicle-vehicle collisions, two involved objects and two were pedestrian-involved. "Most common collision factors this month were unsafe turning movements, right-of-way deviations and unsafe speed," Orloff said.
Orloff described a pedestrian-versus-vehicle crash at Morell and Caroline where the pedestrian was jogging and had earphones; the pedestrian suffered minor injuries and the motorist reported sun in his eyes as a contributing factor. He also summarized an incident at a private fueling station in which a driver was found unconscious after hitting a pump post; that case was classified as a major-injury investigation because the driver lost consciousness, though officers later reported no evidence of impairment.
Commissioners asked whether a pedestrian-activated beacon was present at the Morell and Caroline crossing; Orloff confirmed a flashing beacon exists there and was reported active in the incident. Commissioners requested continued tracking of pedestrian collisions and asked staff to consider engineering countermeasures where patterns emerge.
