The Harford County Council presented a proclamation on March 17 honoring Sarah Valentine, an Amazon delivery driver who rescued 84‑year‑old Mary Chavis from a house fire on Feb. 11, 2026. Council leaders said Valentine located the address, called 911 and guided Chavis to safety before firefighters arrived.
“ I did not prepare for this at all … All I saw was fire and I heard Miss Mary and I just did what I thought anybody would do,” Sarah Valentine said during the recognition ceremony. A representative of the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Company thanked Valentine and offered her an honorary station membership, saying the department and the Chavis family were grateful for her actions.
The council read the proclamation noting the Whiteford Volunteer Fire Company and mutual aid companies responded to the reported dwelling fire in Street, Maryland. The council presented a framed proclamation and members and attendees posed for photographs. The ceremony concluded with brief remarks from the victim’s family and the county’s formal appreciation.
