Council approves larger 4th of July fireworks budget, business licenses and appointments

At its March 9 meeting the South Kingstown Town Council approved a series of routine business items including an increase to the two-year fireworks contract and several license and appointment actions.
Terry Murphy presented a recommendation to raise the Central Main Pyrotechnics contract from $23,000 to $29,000 (an additional $6,000) to add roughly 225 shells for the 2026 display in honor of the USA 250th celebration. Staff said the additional $6,000 is proposed in the FY26/27 operating budget line for professional services and the council approved the increase.
Council also approved a resolution recognizing Girl Scout Week and consented to a liquor-class application for a March 21 event at Boss Arena by Spectra Venue Management, and a victualing license for Coastal Vitality LLC doing business as Fresh Monkey at 540 Kingstown Road. The council confirmed the appointment of Stephen Demetri to the Building Code Board of Appeals after the applicant summarized his construction background.
Where questions were raised about funding for enhancements, council members suggested sponsorships and careful budgeting for recurring costs. The votes on the proclamation, license applications, appointment and the fireworks contract increase were recorded as voice approvals during the meeting.
