Sequoia Union honors student journalists as MA Chronicle wins national Pacemaker recognition

The Sequoia Union High School District Board of Trustees recognized the MA Chronicle student-journalism program at its Sept. 10 meeting after the program earned national honors. Superintendent Leech and Principal Carl Luscoot highlighted the program’s expansion—from a single journalism section a few years ago to multiple sections and leadership roles—and its role in developing student journalists who work on investigative pieces, profiles, photography and other beats.
Staff and trustees praised the program’s professional newsroom model and noted the online MA Chronicle earned a National Scholastic Press Association Pacemaker Award and posted a story that reached 50,000 views in one day. Principal Luscoot introduced adviser John McLair (spelled in the transcript as John Mclair) and invited student editorial-board members to the podium to receive certificates and a photo opportunity.
Trustees celebrated the program’s role in creating civic-minded student journalists and said they look forward to continued coverage at board meetings. The board did not take policy action related to the recognition.
