Yukon Park Board approves minutes, hears Parks Department report on new playgrounds, field upgrades and large summer events

The Yukon Park Board approved the minutes from its Feb. 18 meeting and heard an extensive Parks & Recreation Department report covering playground openings, field renovations, program growth and upcoming events.

Brian, acting parks director, told the board the department recently completed round two of a four-part playground program, "which means that we have eight new playgrounds completed in the last 4 months." He described safety and access improvements at the new lawn-at-library playground, including interior fencing, sidewalks on three sides and plans for a pavilion and additional staff parking to free front parking for the public.

The report outlined site-specific work: Sunrise Park received a new climbing dome, replaced swings and extensive drainage work including French drains to stop repeated washouts; Hillcrest Park gained a large "Mighty Descent" slide intended as a focal point for the playground; and a substantial, ADA-accessible playground at City Park was nearing completion, with three regular parking spaces and one ADA spot planned on the Parkland side. Brian said the city saved $50,000 buying one play structure on an end-of-year sale.

Athletics and fields featured heavily. Brian reported Sunrise softball infields were laser-leveled with about seven inches of new soil and that drainage corrections eliminated routine pooling. The department is pursuing capital requests for new lighting and outfield renovations. Brian also said the department is adding two soccer fields at Taylor Park with fencing and room for future expansion.

On programming, Brian credited a targeted marketing push and partnerships for a rebound in youth softball: the department hosted a "Battle of the Bats" 10U tournament and signed up 133 girls across age groups (6U–12U, including T-ball). He credited staff members Braden Castrop and Sudden Clark for building the league and securing an interleague partnership with a Reno organization.

The department described aquatics preparations and repairs at City Splash after a recent freeze-thaw event and said hiring for lifeguards and concessions is underway. DRC facility renovations — new slip-resistant flooring, lighting upgrades and a temporary relocation of programming — were slated to start in late March and early April.

Brian listed community events: a free flashlight Easter egg hunt on March 27 with staggered start times by age (1–3 at 8:00 p.m., 4–6 at 8:15 p.m., 7–10 at 8:30 p.m.), Senior Games April 10–18 (adding disc golf at Welch Park), and plans for a large Freedom Fest to mark the city's 250th. "We're expecting, you know, over 20,000 people out in the park," Brian said as staff prepare fireworks and a possible drone show (both out to bid and to be approved by council).

After the department's presentation, board members praised the work. Committee member Stephen and Chair Joe Edwards highlighted visible improvements across parks and the softball program's recovery; new board member Melissa Hodge introduced herself and said she grew up in Yukon and is a local real estate agent.

Votes at a glance The board moved and seconded approval of the Feb. 18 minutes; a voice vote was recorded and the motion passed (the transcript records three "Aye" responses). The motion and second were not attributed to named board members in the transcript.

The board rescheduled its next meeting to April 8 and invited RDG Planning & Design to present a master-plan update. Chair Joe Edwards adjourned the meeting.
