Students honored for Youth Art Month; district names winners and announces downtown art expo

The Lafayette Parish School Board recognized students and teachers during its information items for Youth Art Month and Music in Our Schools Month. Teachers and students from elementary, middle and high school arts programs described how arts instruction builds creativity, discipline and teamwork.
“It provides students with essential life skills like creativity, problem solving, discipline and patience,” said Sloan River, a fifth grader who presented a token of appreciation during the meeting. Visual-arts teacher Elizabeth Wedlake and student Alice Judice spoke about patience and perspective; band director Billy Hawko introduced senior Ansley Ingram, a clarinet player and drum major who recently performed at Carnegie Hall.
The board announced parish first-place winners in the winter arts competition across divisions and invited the public to view student work at an art expo in downtown Lafayette on Saturday, March 14, presented in partnership with the Acadiana Center for the Arts. The board also passed a resolution proclaiming March as Youth Art Month in Lafayette Parish.
