Henrico school board approves agenda, recognizes students and staff; consent block passes

Highlights included a performance by Gaiton Elementary's "Gator Beats" drumline under director Ian Jeffrey; the Ray Tate Memorial Award presented to Henrico Fire Chief Jackson Bannard for the department's long-term partnership supporting HCPS Career and Technical Education programs; and recognition of Taran Shivkar of Moody Middle School as the division spelling bee champion, qualifying for the Scripps National Spelling Bee May 26–28 in Washington, D.C.
The board honored a long list of winter-sport state champions (selected highlights announced in the meeting): Maddie Binham, VHSL 5A 100 butterfly (54.72 seconds); Mia Eubank, VHSL 5A 500 freestyle (4:52); Lane Francis, VHSL 5A 50 freestyle (22.67) and 100 backstroke (53.67); Princess Kamaro (300m rankings and national placements); Xavier Curry (pole vault school record); Ammani Moore (multiple event state titles); Emma Ston (3200m state champion); and Brennan Loving (wrestling state champion). The board also announced a reception for student artists whose work appears in the divisionwide school board art show.
The board approved two formal motions by voice vote: the agenda (motion by Mr. Canell; second not specified in the motion line) and the consent agenda covering items 8.01–8.39 (motion by Mr. Young; second by Mrs. Canella).
